The Hero Assistance Fund is available to help families affected by Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy get what they need to experience life to its fullest.
We are aggressively raising funds so families fighting Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy can get the mobility and medical equipment they need. The scope of this fund is broad. We are not limited to one type of need. Duchenne families know what they need, we consult with them and work together to get these boys the necessary equipment.
The Terms
All Hero Assistance Funds are limited to residents of the United States. For overseas needs, please contact us directly.
Grants are disbursed directly to the suppliers/vendors of the equipment, service, or modification. Applicants are required to submit 1-2 estimates from their vendor of choice.
My DMD Hero does not provide cash grants towards reimbursements of purchased equipment or services.
Eligible Assistance Examples include but are not limited to:
Manual wheelchairs,
Power wheelchairs
Scooters
Smart technology (ie: Amazon Echo/Google Home, etc.)
Ramps
Standers
Lifts: Hoyer lifts, Pool lifts, Stairlifts, Perfect Lifts, etc.
We do not provide any financial assistance with Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles at this time. But, if you need guidance on the purchase or where to find funding help, please contact us.
All assistance is subject to a review and may be denied for any reason. Not every request can be met, but we are committed to helping your family get what they need.

How the Process Works
Click below to get a better understanding of our Hero Assistance Funding process! Many of our applicants receive what they apply for between 1-3 months from the date of application. We know you are applying because you have a need, our goal is to get you what you need without delay.

One of our team members will make a phone call to you to assess your needs and make a new friend! We can’t wait to learn about your family and formulate a plan to get your need met.

In order to be fair, and accountable with the money we manage, every request will be reviewed by a review board. It is in this step that we will review your need and approve or deny your request. We deny requests only when it is determined a need does not exist, the request is outside of the scope of our mission, or if the request exceeds our abilities to provide assistance.

Almost every one of our requests for assistance is met with a combination of a grant + a personal fundraiser on Facebook. Most of our Facebook Fundraisers take less than 2 weeks to hit their goal. Many of them only take a day or two!
We will work with you to design a successful fundraiser that will hit its goal quickly! We love this part because it gives your family an opportunity to see the power of community. There are so many generous people in the world and we help you connect with them to meet your need.

Once you hit your fundraising goal we will work with the providing vendor to make the purchase and get it to you as soon as possible.

Paul is our first hero to assist with getting mobility equipment! Paul, at 8 years old had grown out of his wheelchair. With over $5,000 left to pay out of pocket, we came across a Facebook fundraiser that was right up our alley. We were able to provide a matching donation of $500 toward Paul’s chair. We were not able to cover the entire expense, but for us, this is was a great first opportunity to help a hero.
We love helping DMD heroes and their families. In September of 2020 we were finally able to begin accepting and processing applications for assistance. We can’t wait to add more and more pictures of heroes we’ve helped below.
My DMD Hero is GIVING back to other families affected by Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. After getting the diagnosis of Duchenne, THE ANDREWS FAMILY realized how important it is to make the most of the time we have. Every minute is precious and we believe every Duchenne family should have what they need to live life to its fullest in spite of the difficulties of DMD.
